Training is Really Starting to Drag

I didn’t get to the gym enough times in September to meet the minimum requirement for the insurance coverage.  I’m disappointed in myself for that.  All I need to do is go 8 times a month and they’ll pay down part of the fee.  I’ve been going at least 2 times a week since February + running and biking on the street on top of that.  In September I only went to the gym 6 times and didn’t hit the street once.

I’ve just felt really worn out.  The times I’ve gone and run on the treadmill (like last night), I wasn’t sure I could keep running the whole 30 minutes.  My legs just felt spent after about 10 minutes and my feet seem to be losing a little feeling over the course of the run.  Maybe the foot thing are the Yankz! laces needing to be adjusted.

Granted, I have had a cold for the last week or so, but I’m just feeling unmotivated.  I’m thinking about entering an event just to see if that snaps me out of this training funk.

Training Has Hit a Lull

For the three weeks after the Chaska Tri in July I continued on my frenzied training schedule of 6 workouts a week over 5 days.   I was assuming I’d be doing another tri in just over a month.  Then my parents came into town for a week and I only trained 1 day.  Then the next week we got a puppy and I didn’t train at all. 

Long story short… I scrapped the second tri for the year and have been only running, biking and weight training only once or twice a week since.   I haven’t swam once in the month of September and that’s really where I need the help.

I guess I need the event to motivate me to train.  That being said… I’m looking into some runs to do this fall (5ks or 10ks) to keep me working out more consistantly.  I really do get a lot of satisfaction out of working out and being in shape.  I guess I also like to just be able to say I work out and stay in shape too.

I’ll post more on my run training and suspect I’ll continue to bike and swim some as well.

Post Chaska Triathlon Reflection

On the day of the race I was feeling a bit down on my time.  I think partly because my two friends whooped me so badly and I really thought I’d be more competitive than that.  The more I think about it, the less I care about my time.  It was alot of fun and a great challenge that has left me wanting to do more races.  Part of that is to prove to myself that I can do better, but I also just enjoyed the organized competition and competing with my friends. 

Plus prior to starting my training, I’d gotten into a terrible pattern of laziness.  I was’t really overweight or unhealthy, but I wasn’t feeling good about myself and training has really turned that around.  I’ve got more energy in general, I’m in much better shape and I’m way less likely to be laying around on the couch every night.  Plus most of my pants are fitting much better.  I’ll probably have to replace most of them soon relegate them to fat pants status – I’m on the last notch of my belt.

As for my next tri… I’m already looking.  Ben hurt his foot early in training and managed through the pain, but he’ll need a little time to heal up, so I’m pretty sure he’s done for our short Minnesota season.  I’m still kicking around the idea of getting another one in yet.  I think with some hammering on the bike, some swimming refinement and one more race, I would go into the off season feeling pretty good about next season.  If nothing else, I know I’ll be able to get into a 5k or maybe even a 10k, which I never thought I’d hear myself say.

I’ve looked at a few time-based training programs and I’m not really all that impressed.  I have trouble sticking to those anyway, as most of my training time has to be creatively acquired (early am, late pm, slipping out of the house on the weekends).  I just train as much as I can, as often as is reasonable, without neglecting my family.

I think I’ve got a good idea of what I’m going to do as far as the bike and run are concerned.  The swim will be the challenge.  I’m thinking about one of the books on  Maybe a DVD would be better.  That way I can better emulate the techniques.  Maybe I’ll do both.  I just know a slow confident crawl would allow me to finish the swim faster and in better condition to bike than the fast side stroke I did on my first tri – my legs were spent.

I’m also looking at some new equipment for the bike.  The Cannondale frame will have to stay (don’t have the cash for something fancy), but I may try and figure out how I could swing swapping out components for better gear ratios.  I’d also like clipless pedals and an aerobar.  Other than that, I’ve got my tri shorts and top, goggles and a good pair of Adidas running shoes.  I’m set.
