Weekend Workout – New Kicks!

Posted by madtrippin on June 30, 2008

Friday night was a bust workout-wise.  I was home with the kids with no back-up, so there was no getting away with a workout.  Again… Saturday was a ran-out, so the kids came with me to Start Line to get a new pair of running shoes.  The $29.99 Avias have served their purpose, but I need something a little more supportive now.  I wound up with a pair of Adidas SuperNova Sequence for a pretty fair price.  I ran in them for a couple tenths on the store’s treadmill and they were plenty comfy.

Sunday morning went by way too fast, but I was able to get in a ride with my Triple H teammate Ben in the afternoon.  We loosely followed a good portion of the actual tri route + to and from our houses, so it wound up being a little over the 16 miles the actual race will cover.  It should be a good ride if the wind isn’t too wild.  It’s got a heavy mix of decent hills and most of the roads are respectable.

The open water swim didn’t happen – not enough time, so it will have happen next week.

I’ve found that some investment in equipment would make things much nicer – Clipless pedals, shoes, aero bar, moving the shifters up off the downtube and new tires.  At the moment… I’m thinking I’ll only be getting the new tires before the race.  It’s really more a matter of safety and finishing the race without a flat.  It’s starting to make me angry that I’m on the email list for Performance Bike.  I had a conference call with their internet marketing team last year and signed up to see what they had going before the call and never unsubscribed.

I’ve been thinking about how much energy I’ve put into training for this thing and thinking I may need to do at least one more tri this season just to say I’ve gotten my effort’s worth.  I was surprised to hear Ben say the same thing when we were on our ride.

The only problem with doing more races is that it may require me to pick up that extra equipment I was just mentioning.

Less Than 4 Weeks Till the Big Event

Posted by madtrippin on June 25, 2008

Better late than never…

I started running almost 5 months ago.  In Minnesota, February is cold and nasty, so I started on a treadmill at the community center.  I found this to be extremely boring.  Although I hadn’t been all that physically active (I had zero cardio) for a while and have always disliked running for the sake of running, I quickly came to realize the biggest challenge was mostly mental.

I’d always thought it would be cool to do a triathlon – I was really into cycling from the time I was a kid through college.  Lacking motivation to continue to work out, I decided to do the local Chaska River City Days Tri.

Not wanting to go it alone, I mentioned it to my friend Ben and he was on board with zero sales pitch – impressive.  The next thing you know, his brother was in and Team Triple H was formed.  We’re all first time Tri-ers.

Here are the Chaska Sprint Tri race stats:

  1. 1/3 mile swim in the tiny clay hole lake in Chaska
  2. 16 mile bike through the countryside from Chaska to Victoria and back – mixed hills
  3. 3.11 (5K) run up hwy 41 and back – 1st mile has a pretty crazy grade uphill

At present date, I’ve been running or cycling and doing some weight training at least 3 times a week for nearly 5 months.  Much of that has been indoor, but I’m getting my fair share on the street.  I’m turning in respectable 1st timer 5K times at around 24 minutes and my cycling is definitely no concern.  The swimming is what’s worrying me.

Seeing that it was so short, I’ve neglected the swimming pretty badly.  Today was my first training swim.  1/3 of a mile is short… right?  It’s not far – only 10 laps of the pool – but it’s also not that easy, even with a solid cardio base.  I swam for 35 minutes today (I’m now following a training routine I saw on beginnertriathlete.com).  I’m impressed that I was able to do it, and disappointed now that I know this will be my worst event.  I haven’t left myself much time to improve upon my terribly inefficient form.  Such is life.

Despite the swimming, I’m pretty pumped up.  I’ve been watching videos and reading articles online and feel that I know what to expect.  I do have some gear that I still need to pick up.  I’ve got some tri shorts from Aevero coming (great deal on ebay), new shoes this week to break in before the big show, new rubber for the bike along with a tune and maybe a few other bobbles.

This weekend I’ll be doing my first open water swim with a transition to the bike.
